How to win against all odds: What it means to be a woman

Artwork by Tafy Laplanche

The world celebrated International Women’s Day last week on 8th March. IWD is meant to highlight sensitive issues such as gender equality, and violence and abuse against women. Most of the time, a woman’s efforts and contributions are overlooked, and so it’s pertinent that we acknowledge everything women have done and continue to do.

For International Women’s Week, we at the Arts to Hearts Project (@artstoheartsproject) decided to ask our followers to describe woman in one line. The question sticker was meant to honor the women in our lives by spelling out the many qualities they have. The wholesome responses we got were enough to lift up our spirits, and so we decided to share some of them with you as well!

Women are generally considered weak or inferior by the society. It’s true that biologically there lies a difference between a man and a woman, but somehow, when we think of women, one of the few words that instantly comes to our mind is strength. Despite society’s harsh treatment, a woman continues to struggle and excel in ways unimaginable.

We have come a long way historically. From not being able to vote and not being able to own their property, women are now making sure that they are not left behind whether it’s science or technology. How else should we describe someone, who despite all odds, manages to do so much?!

Women’s achievements are not only a testament to their strength but also resilience and persistence. It did not take a year or even a few years for women to get their rights, it took decades, and for them to fight that hard for that long is not something to be taken lightly. It takes a special kind of toughness to not get beaten down by the forces and to continue the fight despite the many hurdles along the way. Generations of women fought this battle for our future.

It’s not easy to be able to survive and shine in an environment that can sometimes be hostile to females. It requires guts and fearlessness to muster up the courage every day and fight your battles. As female artists, we very well know the challenges a woman faces in the art world. From gender disparity to unequal pay, we all know how difficult it can be to be seen and heard. But despite everything, women choose to wake up every day and persist!

A woman is the one who brings life to this earth, something that is both physically and mentally demanding. Her body goes through impossible changes just to bring another human being into this world, and yet she faces it with strength and proceeds to take care of her family. What do we call her if not a superhero?

A woman is tasked with taking care of her house, so she works 24 hours each day of the week. At the same time, she doesn’t lose sight of her passions and juggles her professional life with her personal. And yet, at the end of it, she bears it all gracefully. You need superhuman strength to manage all of this, and a woman is that superhero!

It is said that women have a strong emotional capacity and that is why they love so deeply. That means that the heartbreaks are also felt much more deeply, and still it doesn’t stop her from falling in love again. Women’s empathy knows no bounds, and most importantly, they are not afraid to show it. A woman wears her heart on her sleeve and doesn’t hesitate to show love to the people she cherishes. It would not be wrong to say that a woman is love personified!

A woman is one of the most precious creations on this earth, and it’s difficult to describe her in one word or even a sentence. Women do not need a day to be celebrated, they shine their light on the people around them all year round without expecting anything in return. Let’s not wait for that one day every year, and start celebrating the women in our life. From our sisters, mothers, daughters, and friends, let’s promise to cherish each moment with the females in our lives and never waste an opportunity to empower them!
