Visiting Mexican Artist Catalina’s Creative Studio

In this week’s studio visit interview, Catalina, a talented Mexican artist, shares an intimate glimpse into her creative space. She talks about her daily routine, the inspiration behind her current projects, and her love for experimenting with different techniques. Catalina’s studio is a place of joy and peaceful productivity, surrounded by vibrant colors, a steaming cup of coffee, and great music. 1.  Catalina, Can you describe your typical studio day and creative process?

A Day in the studio begins by setting up the piece I will work on, I usually have a few pieces at once so this leads to a more flexible day as it is full of possibilites. A cup of coffee and great music are always a part of my day at the studio. Last but not least, and certainly a vital part of any artist’s workday, is mixing the colors I will use and selecting the brushes. I commonly switch gears and modify my work as the painting evolves, so I usually spend a few minutes evaluating the road ahead. More often than not, this leads to new ideas for future pieces, so I try to keep track of them to revisit later.

2.       What is the primary inspiration behind your current body of work?  

I am currently creating a series honoring my favorite books… not trying to describe the content or theme but how they made me feel while reading them.

3. What is your favorite memory or incident from your studio?

As an experimental artist, I encounter many “bumps on the road,” which leads to me laughing a lot. Sometimes, an idea seems perfect in my head, but the execution is… well…not as beautiful as it appears in my mind; sometimes, it’s the other way around!

4. Do you have any studio assistants, or do any visitors like pets or kids often accompany you?

As part of a community of artists, I often work side by side with other artists and believe me; this makes everything a lot more fun!

5. How would you describe a dream studio for yourself?

OMG! All the colors in the rainbow, all the brushes humanly possible, big walls to place canvases and few tables to work on, surround music, and a mini sink and fridge for sure

6. What does your studio smell of right now?

Coffee and oil painting mixed with joy and peace.

7. If you could set up your studio anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Home or at the beach

8. Can you discuss any ongoing projects or plans for your work?   

I will judge an art contest in Madrid and Italy. I am also working on my exhibit celebrating my 50th birthday.

9. How do you organize your space?

I try to keep everything organized and keep all the extras separate. As a lefty usually my pallet is on my left and the coffee or water along with extra brushes on the right.

10. What is your favourite corner in the studio?

Is it okay to say where the food is? I am always dancing around, so every inch is special. Sitting down while eating a piece of cake and looking at my painting from a few feet away is definitely fun and thrilling.
