Who is Millie Amber Or Millie Sewell Knight?

Millie Sewell-Knight is an illustrator and textile artist based in South-East London, England. Her work beautifully blends her passions for folk art, fashion, and the wonders of the natural world. Millie’s creative journey is deeply influenced by these elements, which she brings to life through her art. She has developed a distinctive style that combines both traditional and contemporary embroidery techniques. Through her intricate designs, Millie explores themes like romantic symbolism, folkloric motifs, and poetic narratives. Each piece is not just an artwork but a storytelling experience, where every stitch adds depth and meaning, drawing the viewer into a world where art and emotion intertwine.

Education and Early Career

Millie’s artistic journey began with her academic pursuit of illustration at the Arts University Bournemouth, where she studied from 2015 to 2018. It was here that she discovered her love for embroidery, even though her first attempts were less than perfect. Undeterred, she self-taught the art of hand embroidery, and despite the absence of formal training in textiles, Millie flourished in her craft. Her final year project at university marked a significant turning point, as she began to integrate embroidery with illustration, blending her two artistic practices into a cohesive style.

Millie’s deep interest in the history and politics of embroidery led her to write her dissertation on the role of embroidery in contemporary art. Drawing inspiration from Subversive Stitch by Rozsika Parker, she explored how the craft has historically been used as a form of storytelling and subversion, especially in female-dominated spaces. This intellectual approach further informs her work, which blends traditional craft with modern artistic expression.

Artistic Style and Themes

Millie’s work reflects her love for intricate details and the tactile nature of embroidery. Her practice incorporates a variety of stitches, including chain stitch, satin stitch, and French knots, each contributing to the texture and richness of her pieces. One of her favorite techniques, split stitch, is often employed throughout her work, bringing fine details to life. While she enjoys experimenting with different styles, her artistic practice is deeply rooted in the exploration of folk art and the natural world.

Her works are often imbued with a sense of romance, folklore, and nostalgia. Drawing inspiration from fashion, nature, and ephemera, Millie creates embroidered wall hangings and prints that feature motifs like tigers, hearts, birds, and vases. These works, made from velvet, glass beads, and tassel trims, are a fusion of contemporary aesthetics and timeless craft. Her embroidery practice is not only a means of creative expression but also a way to preserve the stories and traditions embedded in the art form.

Embroidery Practice and Techniques

Millie’s journey into embroidery began in her college days, when she taught herself the craft with a couple of books and iron-on designs. Over time, her style evolved, and she became more confident in her ability to blend embroidery with her illustration work. While Millie admits that sometimes the process of coming up with new designs can be challenging, she enjoys the freedom of starting a project without a detailed plan. Instead, she lets the design unfold as she goes, often sketching her ideas on an iPad or in a notebook before transferring them onto fabric.

In addition to her love of hand embroidery, Millie has expressed an interest in expanding her skill set. She hopes to learn more advanced techniques such as appliqué and quilting, as well as experiment with beads and other embellishments. Her commitment to sustainability is evident in her choice of materials, often sourced from places like eBay, local markets, and remnants of unwanted fabrics. Millie ensures that her artistic practice remains mindful of its environmental impact, giving new life to discarded materials.

Millie’s Public Presence and Impact

Millie’s work has gained significant attention, particularly through Instagram, where she showcases her embroidery projects and commissions. While the social media platform can sometimes lead to concerns about the potential for copying, Millie values the exposure it provides. Instagram has been instrumental in securing commissioned work and reaching a broader audience, allowing her to build a loyal following.

Though Millie acknowledges the pressures of social media, she maintains that her Instagram is a space for both personal reflection and public sharing. She posts work she is proud of, regardless of how many likes it receives. The genuine connection with her audience is more important than popularity, and Millie is not one to compromise her artistic integrity just to please others.

Her collection includes motifs such as tigers, birds, hearts, and vases, each rendered with delicate stitches and vibrant glass beads. These artworks are available for purchase in her online shop, where collectors can acquire one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect Millie’s signature style.

Her work has also been featured in exhibitions, and she continues to engage with the broader arts community. Millie’s publications reflect her ability to blend fine art with craft, giving embroidery a place in the contemporary art conversation. Her ability to create tactile, intimate works that hold both aesthetic and historical significance has earned her a place in the modern textile arts scene.

Millie’s Plan For Future

Looking ahead, Millie has big plans for her craft. She’s eager to explore more advanced techniques like appliqué and quilting, and she’s also excited to incorporate more embellishments like beads into her work. “Experimenting is such a big part of what I do, and I’m excited to see where it takes me,” she says.

While she’s not quite ready to make embroidery her full-time career just yet, Millie is optimistic about the future. She’s deeply passionate about her craft and is always looking for ways to grow and challenge herself. With her unique blend of illustration and embroidery, she’s undoubtedly on a path to greater success.

We wish Millie continued success and good fortune in her journey ahead.
