Ep 40. Drawing from life experiences & memories and creating community through art with Erika B Hess, Artist & podcast host I Like your work
A rts To Hearts Podcast is all about creating from a safe space to communicate and share the messy and wonderful side of being an Artist.
In the 40th episode of the Arts to Hearts podcast, our host Charuka Arora is joined in conversation by an incredible artist, podcaster and curator Erika B Hess who shares her interest in colours, being inspired by her childhood memories and other women’s experiences, and the importance of community in the world of art.
Erika is an artist, curator and host of the podcast – I like your Work, based in Columbus, Ohio
Coming from a small countryside town and a family with no ties in the art world, she began pursuing art as a career in 2007
Erika shares that art came naturally to her, it was something which she had done her entire life and never credited herself for the talent she had. It was only in grad school that she actually begun understanding the art world, the artist community and making art a career.
Erika began with oil paintings and figures and then moved to abstract work. During her pregnancy she started drawing from memory, life and relationships.
The flowers she received on being a mom, the tradition of giving flowers on birth of a child, a gift for a lover, on death is really what drew her into the flower bearing paintings.
She describes it as a way to communicate a deep emotion that we may not have the words to express, a visual communication similar to a painting.
Erika stresses on the importance and need to find the correct community in order to pursue your dreams and achieve your goals.
