Painting on walls and ceilings has never been more fun or exciting than with murals. It has become a revolutionary art form that dispels the notion that walls and ceilings must be boring. The Mexican Muralism art movement, which has gained a lot of attention in recent years, shows how murals can be painted in many different styles and ways, with fresco being the most well-known.

In recent years, murals have become more common, and the methods used to produce them have changed dramatically. Oil painting is currently a popular medium for muralists. Each year, people are becoming more aware of the art of murals, their artistic value, and their significance in the community.

This thought prompted us to select five mural artists from the Arts to Hearts community that are painting our world colorful with one wall at a time for this week’s feature article.

Uli Smith (@paintbyuli)

Uli, a Sacramento-based artist originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, now lives and works in the city. For the past 15 years, she has pursued her passion for painting as an independent muralist and self-taught visual artist. In her work, she hopes to inspire people, elevate spirits, and inspire them to be their best selves. The University of San Francisco awarded her a Master of Public Health degree and she is passionate about promoting health equity, establishing healthy communities, and fighting for social justice. She is a firm believer in the power of art to transform lives and spaces. Her inspiration comes from the natural world’s vibrancy and healing properties. Reconnecting with nature and protecting it is a message that she conveys via her art.

Ali M. Williams (@alimwilliams)

Muralist Ali M. Williams works out of the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Moore College of Art and Design with a BFA in Fine Art, she began painting murals. She has exhibited her paintings and murals around the world and taught art workshops in schools and community organisations on the east coast.

She has worked with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the Pennsylvania Conference for Women, Riverside Correctional Facility, Zambia Tukongote Community Projects, and the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disability Services as at-risk youth and adults, as well as several other organisations. Primark, NFL, Zappos, New Balance, and Nasdaq are among her most recent clients.

Lauren Lewchuk (@art_by_lewchuk)

Lauren Lewchuk is a self-taught artist living in Texas who draws inspiration from nature, wildlife, and beautiful landscapes. Born and reared on Maryland’s east coast, Lewchuk drew her inspiration for her intricately drawn fictional ecosystems from the stunning natural surroundings. Lewchuk’s work encompasses a wide range of mediums, colours, and textures, all of which she uses to create her intricate pattern-like paintings, large-scale abstract landscapes, and, most recently, digital pattern creation. To create depth, Lewchuk uses fluid materials, metallics and neons, and the intuitive placement of hundreds or thousands of tiny elements. He also exhibits patience, focus, and precision to create vibrant and intricate dreamlike landscapes for the viewer to discover.

Murjani Holmes (@murj-art)

Murjani is an artist working in visual mediums and a muralist who resides in New York. Her use of color demonstrates a high level of inventiveness on her part. She isn’t afraid to use various color combinations, which is impressive. She creates things that don’t go together, but by her inventiveness, she manages to make them all work. The portion of her job she enjoys the most is the part in which she gets to do the things she loves. Her most important objective in life is to achieve success in her art to the point that she can quit her job working 9 to 5 and devote herself entirely to creating the art that brings her joy.

Poonam Sharma (@rangriva)

India’s Jaipur is where Poonam Sharma was born and raised. She landed in Toronto in October 2013 as a new artist. Additionally, she’s been working closely with the local community as she adjusts to her new surroundings. As part of St. James Town Art’s competition banner design in Toronto in 2014, Poonam provided banner designs. She won the 2014 Neighborhood Art Network T-shirt design competition in Toronto. Her ART STARTS Platform A-Microgrant 2015 was awarded by the Toronto Arts Council.

For the past few years, Poonam has volunteered her time with St. James Town Arts & Community Matters, working on various art and landscape projects to enhance the neighborhood. Microgrant Project MirrorMe also aired Poonam’s interview on Radio One (99.1 FM) in August 2015. Her art has also been written about in several blogs, including the Walking Women blog on July 2, 2014.
