How to build your self-confidence as an artist

Watch & Listen to this podcast Episode.

This week on Arts to Hearts Podcast, our host Charuka Arora sits down to have a heart-to-heart with her beloved audience. As our third season nears its end, Charuka is giving the aspiring artists some tips from her own experience in the art world and shedding light on how to build self-confidence.

As someone who has been on her own creative journey for some time now, Charuka has learned a thing or two, and as she looks back on how far she has come, she is guiding other aspiring artists on how they can find their confidence in their abilities as an artist. If Charuka were to start her creative journey today, she would ask herself six questions to make sure she knows where her heart is so she can ensure that her creative journey goes on as smoothly as possible.

For Charuka, it’s important to put unwavering faith in yourself and your creativity, and for that, you need to ask yourself if you are ready to do that. Furthermore, it’s important to understand that hurdles are part of the journey, and that you need to be ready to fall a million times, and get back up every single time. The third thing you need to do as a creative, is to embrace your emotions fully, no matter how difficult or uncomfortable it may feel at that moment.

The fourth question you must ask yourself is whether are willing to break free from the fear of judgment. After you have broken free from the societal shackles, you must look within and ask yourself, if you are ready to write your story, as that is the most crucial aspect. And in the end, you must love and accept yourself fully, and ask yourself, “Can I be unapologetically myself?”

This episode is filled with wisdom and some amazing reflection exercises, so tune in to this week’s podcast and join Charuka on this exploration of what it means to be an artist!

**** – (): 0:00 Charuka Arora

**** – (): To be an artist is to believe to be an

**** – (): 0:03 Charuka Arora

**** – (): artist like you have to believe that

**** – (): 0:04 Charuka Arora

**** – (): you’re an artist sometimes it’s just not

**** – (): 0:07 Charuka Arora

**** – (): giving up even if you are bad if you’re

**** – (): 0:09 Charuka Arora

**** – (): doing a crappy job if you are just even

**** – (): 0:13 Charuka Arora

**** – (): barely making it our artists or mostly

**** – (): 0:16 Charuka Arora

**** – (): an extension of Who We Are

**** – (): 0:18 Charuka Arora

**** – (): and

**** – (): 0:19 Charuka Arora

**** – (): the more comfortable that you become

**** – (): 0:21 Charuka Arora

**** – (): with yourself the more loving of who you

**** – (): 0:23 Charuka Arora

**** – (): are the more you embrace your own

**** – (): 0:25 Charuka Arora

**** – (): identity

**** – (): uh the you know those stronger you feel

**** – (): 0:26 Charuka Arora

**** – (): 0:30 Charuka Arora

**** – (): associated with your art I’m ready to

**** – (): 0:32

**** – (): surrender and I’m going to put all my

**** – (): 0:34

**** – (): faith in my creativity and I am going to

**** – (): 0:37

**** – (): be an artist and I’m going to put my

**** – (): 0:40

**** – (): identity into it and yes I’m going to

**** – (): 0:43

**** – (): put that faith in me if I as an artist

**** – (): 0:45

**** – (): myself wouldn’t

**** – (): 0:46

**** – (): love myself if I don’t give that warmth

**** – (): 0:49

**** – (): to myself to my soul and if I don’t

**** – (): 0:52

**** – (): fully love and accept of who I am

**** – (): 0:55

**** – (): I wouldn’t really be able to put myself

**** – (): 0:57

**** – (): in a hundred percent of who I am in my

**** – (): 1:00

**** – (): work in my art in my creativity

**** – (): 1:02

**** – (): [Music]

**** – (): 1:08

**** – (): hey you guys welcome back to the Arts to

**** – (): 1:10

**** – (): Hearts podcast this is your host charaka

**** – (): 1:13

**** – (): and I’m very excited to be on the

**** – (): 1:15

**** – (): podcast today to share my thoughts and

**** – (): 1:17

**** – (): some things that I’ve been recently

**** – (): 1:19

**** – (): thinking about

**** – (): 1:20

**** – (): um if you are a regular listener thank

**** – (): 1:22

**** – (): you so much for joining me today by

**** – (): 1:24

**** – (): myself in this episode where I’m going

**** – (): 1:27

**** – (): to share six questions I would ask

**** – (): 1:29

**** – (): myself if I was starting

**** – (): 1:31

**** – (): um as an artist today and you know why

**** – (): 1:34

**** – (): I’ve been thinking about this a lot um

**** – (): 1:36

**** – (): you know sometimes

**** – (): 1:39

**** – (): um we you know I’ve been looking at a

**** – (): 1:41

**** – (): lot of um other artists I’ve been

**** – (): 1:43

**** – (): looking at younger artists today and how

**** – (): 1:45

**** – (): differently they are doing things and

**** – (): 1:48

**** – (): um how their work is evolving and how

**** – (): 1:50

**** – (): they are taking this career path and I

**** – (): 1:53

**** – (): keep asking myself that is there

**** – (): 1:56

**** – (): something I would do differently today

**** – (): 1:58

**** – (): or if there’s something I would um I

**** – (): 2:01

**** – (): would have done if I had to redo but

**** – (): 2:03

**** – (): before I go into that I really wanted to

**** – (): 2:05

**** – (): say um a big thank you to all of you

**** – (): 2:08

**** – (): who’ve supported us with the studio

**** – (): 2:10

**** – (): visit book um the new call for art and

**** – (): 2:12

**** – (): uh Magazine with Rachel working with

**** – (): 2:16

**** – (): Rachel has been such an amazing amazing

**** – (): 2:19

**** – (): experience you know launching the

**** – (): 2:21

**** – (): magazine issue three with Rachel Burke I

**** – (): 2:25

**** – (): make Instagram I make Instagram I don’t

**** – (): 2:27

**** – (): know how we call that but Rachel has

**** – (): 2:30

**** – (): been such a dream you know her work I

**** – (): 2:32

**** – (): think it’s the happiest issue we’ve just

**** – (): 2:36

**** – (): made so far and I think that was the

**** – (): 2:38

**** – (): idea the Brighton bold issue for the

**** – (): 2:41

**** – (): summer we wanted to produce

**** – (): 2:43

**** – (): um a magazine issue that would really

**** – (): 2:45

**** – (): bring smile

**** – (): 2:46

**** – (): um on your faces would look like

**** – (): 2:49

**** – (): happy

**** – (): 2:51

**** – (): um addition to your desk your coffee

**** – (): 2:53

**** – (): table uh your morning bedside you know

**** – (): 2:56

**** – (): all that Glam but I’m very excited

**** – (): 2:59

**** – (): because this issue has been one of my

**** – (): 3:01

**** – (): personal favorite and we have some

**** – (): 3:02

**** – (): amazing amazing editions within it you

**** – (): 3:05

**** – (): know from having

**** – (): 3:07

**** – (): um

**** – (): 3:07

**** – (): interviews with Alicia and Kat as our

**** – (): 3:10

**** – (): creative gurus to having some exciting

**** – (): 3:15

**** – (): um interviews with artists from all

**** – (): 3:17

**** – (): parts of the world in our curated

**** – (): 3:18

**** – (): section which is essentially one of the

**** – (): 3:21

**** – (): most exciting where we pick new batch of

**** – (): 3:23

**** – (): artists every Edition and what’s even

**** – (): 3:27

**** – (): more exciting that now we’re working on

**** – (): 3:28

**** – (): our Autumn Edition which is uh the call

**** – (): 3:31

**** – (): for art which is going to be ending very

**** – (): 3:32

**** – (): very soon so if you are interested in

**** – (): 3:35

**** – (): being a part of the automation for which

**** – (): 3:40

**** – (): um

**** – (): 3:41

**** – (): the theme is sanctuary and I really

**** – (): 3:43

**** – (): wanted to talk about this theme because

**** – (): 3:45

**** – (): you know when I was thinking about the

**** – (): 3:46

**** – (): theme that we would want to keep for an

**** – (): 3:48

**** – (): Autumn

**** – (): 3:50

**** – (): um Edition I really was thinking about

**** – (): 3:52

**** – (): what would go what does autumn make me

**** – (): 3:55

**** – (): feel like what is you know what is that

**** – (): 3:57

**** – (): we can do how can artists respond to

**** – (): 4:00

**** – (): this Edition and I think for me I look

**** – (): 4:03

**** – (): at Autumn as a season of uh to going

**** – (): 4:06

**** – (): inwards I think a lot of that season

**** – (): 4:08

**** – (): starts with going inwards from finding

**** – (): 4:11

**** – (): Comfort

**** – (): 4:12

**** – (): um I think Summers is a lot about going

**** – (): 4:14

**** – (): out going in the wild and you know just

**** – (): 4:17

**** – (): taking the Sun and I love fall but I

**** – (): 4:22

**** – (): think what’s even more exciting the

**** – (): 4:24

**** – (): period before that where you know we’re

**** – (): 4:26

**** – (): all in this transition mode where we are

**** – (): 4:28

**** – (): actually enjoying

**** – (): 4:30

**** – (): um where we are actually enjoying the

**** – (): 4:32

**** – (): outdoors but also our retreating in our

**** – (): 4:34

**** – (): own sanctuaries in our own homes in our

**** – (): 4:37

**** – (): own Comforts and that is very exciting I

**** – (): 4:40

**** – (): think

**** – (): 4:40

**** – (): with the idea of sanctuary as a theme we

**** – (): 4:43

**** – (): were not only looking for essential in

**** – (): 4:45

**** – (): the sense of of course in the literal

**** – (): 4:46

**** – (): word of the you know I think about the

**** – (): 4:49

**** – (): animal kingdom and I think about I don’t

**** – (): 4:51

**** – (): know I think about homes and I I think

**** – (): 4:54

**** – (): about

**** – (): 4:55

**** – (): um my my dogs and I think about anything

**** – (): 4:57

**** – (): that helps you go inwards I think that

**** – (): 5:00

**** – (): is very

**** – (): 5:01

**** – (): um that that is what I think this Autumn

**** – (): 5:03

**** – (): issue would be to me and what I how I

**** – (): 5:06

**** – (): translate this um

**** – (): 5:08

**** – (): theme so I think I’m very very excited

**** – (): 5:11

**** – (): to look at the submissions and Dinah who

**** – (): 5:14

**** – (): is a guest curator for this Edition I

**** – (): 5:16

**** – (): think she really fits in well with her

**** – (): 5:18

**** – (): own work with her own ideologies I think

**** – (): 5:20

**** – (): we uh with every Edition we always try

**** – (): 5:23

**** – (): to bring you know uh the heart of the

**** – (): 5:26

**** – (): curator and the theme of the magazine

**** – (): 5:28

**** – (): together so it even fits even better

**** – (): 5:30

**** – (): we’re very excited to release

**** – (): 5:32

**** – (): um

**** – (): 5:33

**** – (): you know the cover artist for this but

**** – (): 5:34

**** – (): this wouldn’t happen until we’ve

**** – (): 5:36

**** – (): actually come through the magazine

**** – (): 5:37

**** – (): prepare the Edition and we’ll announce

**** – (): 5:39

**** – (): that you know just in time so if you’re

**** – (): 5:42

**** – (): interested make sure that you visit

**** – (): 5:44

**** – (): www.ask2hatchproject.com and write on

**** – (): 5:46

**** – (): the website you’ll see call for art and

**** – (): 5:49

**** – (): there’s a submit button uh you can open

**** – (): 5:51

**** – (): this in the mobile and on desktop

**** – (): 5:55

**** – (): anywhere else you like I will also link

**** – (): 5:57

**** – (): this in the show notes but also the

**** – (): 5:59

**** – (): description of this episode wherever

**** – (): 6:02

**** – (): you’re listening you’ll just find it

**** – (): 6:03

**** – (): here

**** – (): 6:04

**** – (): okay now I want to come back in this

**** – (): 6:08

**** – (): episode I really wanted to talk about

**** – (): 6:10

**** – (): what would I do differently and

**** – (): 6:13

**** – (): what would I ask myself if I were to

**** – (): 6:16

**** – (): start as an artist today and this point

**** – (): 6:18

**** – (): in time when I started my career I

**** – (): 6:21

**** – (): really had no idea absolutely no idea

**** – (): 6:23

**** – (): what being an artist meant I had been

**** – (): 6:26

**** – (): working

**** – (): 6:27

**** – (): um before I actually decided to be an

**** – (): 6:30

**** – (): artist I didn’t come from an art school

**** – (): 6:31

**** – (): I had studied in a design school and I

**** – (): 6:34

**** – (): was finding my way as a designer and I

**** – (): 6:36

**** – (): had been working here and there quite a

**** – (): 6:39

**** – (): few years in the startup in design in

**** – (): 6:42

**** – (): quite a few Fields here and there but I

**** – (): 6:44

**** – (): just

**** – (): 6:45

**** – (): felt I wasn’t in the right place I

**** – (): 6:48

**** – (): really felt this in the core of my heart

**** – (): 6:50

**** – (): and I know this now because every time

**** – (): 6:52

**** – (): even when there is a low season even

**** – (): 6:53

**** – (): where things don’t seem to work fine

**** – (): 6:56

**** – (): today I know it in my heart that I’m in

**** – (): 6:59

**** – (): the right place and I think this is a

**** – (): 7:01

**** – (): question that has really like this has

**** – (): 7:03

**** – (): made me really feel comfortable because

**** – (): 7:06

**** – (): in in in I think close to 10 years now

**** – (): 7:10

**** – (): probably over of me working I think I

**** – (): 7:14

**** – (): have felt the most connected at this

**** – (): 7:17

**** – (): point and I have done quite a few things

**** – (): 7:20

**** – (): in my career tried my hands that

**** – (): 7:23

**** – (): a lot of things and I hope that I keep

**** – (): 7:25

**** – (): doing that I think that has been one of

**** – (): 7:27

**** – (): the most incredible learning course for

**** – (): 7:30

**** – (): me because the amount of skills I’ve

**** – (): 7:32

**** – (): gained the amount of exposure the

**** – (): 7:34

**** – (): relationships and the learnings that

**** – (): 7:36

**** – (): I’ve had uh you know dipping my hands

**** – (): 7:38

**** – (): into these new things has been amazing

**** – (): 7:41

**** – (): and I think um

**** – (): 7:43

**** – (): it’s exciting and sometimes it does get

**** – (): 7:46

**** – (): confusing but also you understand with

**** – (): 7:48

**** – (): within your own self when you speak to

**** – (): 7:50

**** – (): yourself and you hear yourself okay this

**** – (): 7:53

**** – (): fits in I feel I belong here I feel even

**** – (): 7:56

**** – (): if I’m not just the right perfect you

**** – (): 7:58

**** – (): know and I think we’re not

**** – (): 8:00

**** – (): we’re never the perfect piece but we

**** – (): 8:02

**** – (): alter ourselves and figure out a

**** – (): 8:04

**** – (): situation where we feel like okay now

**** – (): 8:06

**** – (): this fee this fits well while I was

**** – (): 8:09

**** – (): working as a designer I was always very

**** – (): 8:11

**** – (): confused I didn’t know

**** – (): 8:13

**** – (): um of course I was lacking a community

**** – (): 8:15

**** – (): even then but I think there was this

**** – (): 8:19

**** – (): feeling of wanting more or feeling of

**** – (): 8:23

**** – (): disappointment also because I think

**** – (): 8:24

**** – (): sometimes you think that you know being

**** – (): 8:27

**** – (): in a certain space or being in a certain

**** – (): 8:29

**** – (): way in a profession would feel

**** – (): 8:31

**** – (): differently and it when you actually go

**** – (): 8:33

**** – (): there and you realize oh my God this

**** – (): 8:35

**** – (): isn’t that and I think that is exactly

**** – (): 8:38

**** – (): what I felt I felt like

**** – (): 8:40

**** – (): I was trying my best but I knew that my

**** – (): 8:43

**** – (): best wasn’t coming out and I think it’s

**** – (): 8:45

**** – (): an important part so

**** – (): 8:48

**** – (): looking back at all these years I

**** – (): 8:50

**** – (): thought I’ll do a session I’ll do a I’ll

**** – (): 8:53

**** – (): talk to you about what do I what would I

**** – (): 8:56

**** – (): ask myself the questions I would ask

**** – (): 8:58

**** – (): myself

**** – (): 8:59

**** – (): um if I were to you know be an artist

**** – (): 9:01

**** – (): today the first question I think I would

**** – (): 9:03

**** – (): ask myself and

**** – (): 9:05

**** – (): this is a really important one because

**** – (): 9:09

**** – (): I feel as an artist

**** – (): 9:10

**** – (): it takes and not only artists but any I

**** – (): 9:13

**** – (): think creative path where everything is

**** – (): 9:15

**** – (): very unknown it’s no right formula and

**** – (): 9:17

**** – (): it’s not like okay if I like something

**** – (): 9:19

**** – (): everybody may like something it’s not

**** – (): 9:21

**** – (): mathematics there’s no like right and

**** – (): 9:24

**** – (): there’s no wrong

**** – (): 9:25

**** – (): I think there is you have to you have to

**** – (): 9:28

**** – (): put a lot of faith in yourself so my

**** – (): 9:32

**** – (): first question to myself would be

**** – (): 9:34

**** – (): am I willing to put an unwavering faith

**** – (): 9:38

**** – (): in my own self in my own creativity am I

**** – (): 9:42

**** – (): so uh ready for doing this that I would

**** – (): 9:45

**** – (): trust myself I would put all my trust in

**** – (): 9:48

**** – (): my creativity and believe that yes I can

**** – (): 9:51

**** – (): do this because I think uh to be an

**** – (): 9:55

**** – (): artist is to believe to be an artist

**** – (): 9:57

**** – (): like you have to believe that you’re an

**** – (): 9:59

**** – (): artist there is no degree that’s going

**** – (): 10:01

**** – (): to give you off right you know

**** – (): 10:03

**** – (): um you can come from an art school and

**** – (): 10:06

**** – (): not feel like an artist and you cannot

**** – (): 10:08

**** – (): absolutely have not a degree and be an

**** – (): 10:11

**** – (): artist I think there’s no one way I

**** – (): 10:13

**** – (): think what makes us artists is the

**** – (): 10:15

**** – (): moment we start believing in ourselves

**** – (): 10:17

**** – (): and personally I feel like um if I were

**** – (): 10:22

**** – (): to ask myself

**** – (): 10:23

**** – (): um I would really ask you know if am I

**** – (): 10:26

**** – (): ready

**** – (): 10:27

**** – (): to believe and to act and live like an

**** – (): 10:31

**** – (): artisan not wait for that moment because

**** – (): 10:32

**** – (): I personally feel that uh there’s so

**** – (): 10:35

**** – (): much of imposter there’s so many

**** – (): 10:37

**** – (): um you know days and ideas we waste

**** – (): 10:40

**** – (): because we feel like oh I’m not an

**** – (): 10:42

**** – (): artist and I think this is a question

**** – (): 10:44

**** – (): that has come up with so many young

**** – (): 10:46

**** – (): artists today and I know I’ve had that

**** – (): 10:48

**** – (): and I know so many people in our own

**** – (): 10:50

**** – (): Community who have had this while they

**** – (): 10:52

**** – (): were growing their careers and

**** – (): 10:55

**** – (): I think if we if we deal this with the

**** – (): 10:58

**** – (): beginning of you know wherever we are

**** – (): 11:00

**** – (): and surrender like you know am I ready

**** – (): 11:03

**** – (): to surrender yes I’m ready to surrender

**** – (): 11:05

**** – (): and I’m going to put all my faith in my

**** – (): 11:08

**** – (): creativity and I am going to be an

**** – (): 11:11

**** – (): artist and I’m going to put my identity

**** – (): 11:14

**** – (): into it and yes I’m going to put that

**** – (): 11:16

**** – (): faith in me

**** – (): 11:18

**** – (): so if you are at any state and you feel

**** – (): 11:21

**** – (): like um

**** – (): 11:22

**** – (): you you know you want to take your

**** – (): 11:24

**** – (): identity as an artist and I’m

**** – (): 11:26

**** – (): challenging you if you want to be an

**** – (): 11:28

**** – (): artist are you ready to put your un

**** – (): 11:31

**** – (): ending Faith unwavering faith in

**** – (): 11:34

**** – (): yourself in your creativity and take

**** – (): 11:37

**** – (): this um identity are you ready to call

**** – (): 11:39

**** – (): yourself an artist even if whatever kind

**** – (): 11:42

**** – (): of art you make you mean make the best

**** – (): 11:44

**** – (): art and still not be okay with it and

**** – (): 11:47

**** – (): maybe just in the beginning of your

**** – (): 11:49

**** – (): career and beginning of your skill and

**** – (): 11:51

**** – (): still feel like an artist I think

**** – (): 11:53

**** – (): there’s no right way and right stage or

**** – (): 11:55

**** – (): a right start of being an artist we’re

**** – (): 11:57

**** – (): all artists in our own stages and we

**** – (): 11:59

**** – (): just have to believe that okay now let’s

**** – (): 12:02

**** – (): come to the second question now this is

**** – (): 12:04

**** – (): an interesting one and it particularly

**** – (): 12:06

**** – (): may not be specific to artists but I do

**** – (): 12:09

**** – (): feel like as artists as creative people

**** – (): 12:11

**** – (): this happens to us a lot more

**** – (): 12:15

**** – (): my question would be

**** – (): 12:17

**** – (): am I ready to fall a million times and

**** – (): 12:21

**** – (): get back and pull myself again together

**** – (): 12:24

**** – (): am I ready to

**** – (): 12:28

**** – (): pull those pieces of mine that have been

**** – (): 12:31

**** – (): you know scattered away and get up again

**** – (): 12:34

**** – (): and again and again because I feel like

**** – (): 12:36

**** – (): the creative Journey a lot of time feels

**** – (): 12:38

**** – (): like that

**** – (): 12:39

**** – (): um you know there’s so many days even

**** – (): 12:41

**** – (): today I feel like oh I have lost my way

**** – (): 12:44

**** – (): I have uh lost my um space and my

**** – (): 12:48

**** – (): identity uh and a lot of that up happens

**** – (): 12:51

**** – (): because uh there’s so much that is

**** – (): 12:54

**** – (): happening in my life if I’m not being

**** – (): 12:55

**** – (): able to take

**** – (): 12:57

**** – (): um actions as I would want and a lot of

**** – (): 13:00

**** – (): times I feel like

**** – (): 13:02

**** – (): um we fail and we fail and we make

**** – (): 13:04

**** – (): mistakes and we learn and this really

**** – (): 13:07

**** – (): happens a lot in in a state in a in our

**** – (): 13:11

**** – (): careers when we’re trying to grow we you

**** – (): 13:13

**** – (): know being an artist does not come with

**** – (): 13:14

**** – (): the rule book and we all make our own

**** – (): 13:17

**** – (): rule books and we all make our own

**** – (): 13:18

**** – (): mistakes and then we all make our own

**** – (): 13:20

**** – (): answers and it takes a lot of hit and

**** – (): 13:22

**** – (): try

**** – (): 13:24

**** – (): um there is no one formula that fits us

**** – (): 13:26

**** – (): all so

**** – (): 13:29

**** – (): that means in that process you will fall

**** – (): 13:32

**** – (): that means in that process you will feel

**** – (): 13:34

**** – (): like you are lost and uh you will have

**** – (): 13:37

**** – (): to any time that you feel oh now that

**** – (): 13:40

**** – (): you found yourself there will be another

**** – (): 13:42

**** – (): day where you will feel like oh my god I

**** – (): 13:44

**** – (): think I’m lost again or now I don’t know

**** – (): 13:47

**** – (): I feel like I can’t get up and that is

**** – (): 13:49

**** – (): when you have to pick yourself up and I

**** – (): 13:52

**** – (): can I really cannot even counter my

**** – (): 13:54

**** – (): fingers now I mean I can even when I

**** – (): 13:57

**** – (): look back today I feel like there’s so

**** – (): 13:59

**** – (): many days that I can so many places I

**** – (): 14:01

**** – (): can look back at and I’m like oh my God

**** – (): 14:04

**** – (): I felt miserable I felt so hard and

**** – (): 14:08

**** – (): I’m so proud of myself because I pulled

**** – (): 14:11

**** – (): myself together at that point to brought

**** – (): 14:12

**** – (): me here you know

**** – (): 14:15

**** – (): um sometimes it’s just not giving up

**** – (): 14:17

**** – (): even if you are bad if you’re doing a

**** – (): 14:19

**** – (): crappy job if you are just even barely

**** – (): 14:23

**** – (): making it but even if you’re getting up

**** – (): 14:25

**** – (): and showing up and thinking about it and

**** – (): 14:28

**** – (): just get you know with every fall you

**** – (): 14:31

**** – (): think about how can you get back

**** – (): 14:33

**** – (): together and I think it’s a very

**** – (): 14:34

**** – (): important part of a practice

**** – (): 14:36

**** – (): um creative practice it’s it’s a skill

**** – (): 14:39

**** – (): that I think artists really need so if

**** – (): 14:42

**** – (): you want to be an artist and if I were

**** – (): 14:44

**** – (): to ask myself when I you know if I were

**** – (): 14:46

**** – (): to do this today I would really ask

**** – (): 14:48

**** – (): myself am I if I would I sign up to pull

**** – (): 14:52

**** – (): myself back again a million times again

**** – (): 14:54

**** – (): and again and again and I think yes I

**** – (): 14:56

**** – (): really would do that because

**** – (): 14:59

**** – (): I really really enjoy this idea I’m not

**** – (): 15:03

**** – (): afraid of uh falling even though I you

**** – (): 15:06

**** – (): know it hurts even though it’s hard even

**** – (): 15:08

**** – (): though it pains but I think my curiosity

**** – (): 15:12

**** – (): leads over my fear and I would do that

**** – (): 15:16

**** – (): in a heartbeat here’s my third question

**** – (): 15:18

**** – (): for you for myself if I were to do this

**** – (): 15:21

**** – (): today

**** – (): 15:22

**** – (): am I eager or willing to go beyond the

**** – (): 15:26

**** – (): surface a question that I really ask a

**** – (): 15:29

**** – (): lot of people and I feel I’m so grateful

**** – (): 15:31

**** – (): for being an artist I think as artists

**** – (): 15:33

**** – (): we are deep thinkers we really look

**** – (): 15:36

**** – (): beyond the surface we’re always you know

**** – (): 15:38

**** – (): thinking more than what we’re seeing and

**** – (): 15:40

**** – (): we’re really analyzing and

**** – (): 15:43

**** – (): um adding meaning to things and looking

**** – (): 15:45

**** – (): for meanings and looking for purpose and

**** – (): 15:47

**** – (): I think if you if you’re someone who

**** – (): 15:51

**** – (): enjoys that then yes I mean oh my God

**** – (): 15:55

**** – (): one you’re on a wonderful ride but

**** – (): 15:58

**** – (): honestly it’s not always easy because

**** – (): 16:02

**** – (): um when you’re looking for answers and

**** – (): 16:04

**** – (): when you’re looking for thoughts and

**** – (): 16:05

**** – (): when you’re digging beyond the um

**** – (): 16:08

**** – (): surface

**** – (): 16:09

**** – (): a I think it’s not always a usual task

**** – (): 16:12

**** – (): like you know if you see yourself

**** – (): 16:15

**** – (): um in you know in context to other

**** – (): 16:16

**** – (): people you’ll often see that artists are

**** – (): 16:19

**** – (): usually the thinkers you know we feel

**** – (): 16:21

**** – (): better I mean we just feel differently

**** – (): 16:24

**** – (): we feel much deeper our emotions are

**** – (): 16:27

**** – (): very

**** – (): 16:28

**** – (): um

**** – (): 16:29

**** – (): intense and I think that is why we

**** – (): 16:31

**** – (): express them

**** – (): 16:33

**** – (): um

**** – (): 16:34

**** – (): on in in a form of a creativity so I

**** – (): 16:37

**** – (): would really ask myself that am I

**** – (): 16:39

**** – (): willing to feel those emotions

**** – (): 16:42

**** – (): those

**** – (): 16:43

**** – (): um more strongly am I am I willing to

**** – (): 16:47

**** – (): embrace that side of me and I feel like

**** – (): 16:49

**** – (): with before being an artist I really was

**** – (): 16:53

**** – (): ashamed of that I feel like I’m I was

**** – (): 16:55

**** – (): really

**** – (): 16:57

**** – (): um

**** – (): 16:58

**** – (): I knew I was like that I was always

**** – (): 17:00

**** – (): someone who would feel things very

**** – (): 17:02

**** – (): deeply I would really feel things very I

**** – (): 17:05

**** – (): was I was sensitive and I was not using

**** – (): 17:08

**** – (): that sensitivity I feel like to my

**** – (): 17:10

**** – (): strengths the moment I started um think

**** – (): 17:12

**** – (): I the day I did you know the day I

**** – (): 17:15

**** – (): decided to be an artist and I decided

**** – (): 17:18

**** – (): that I’m going to use my creativity and

**** – (): 17:19

**** – (): I’m really proud of it and I surrendered

**** – (): 17:22

**** – (): and I accepted and I was like yes this

**** – (): 17:25

**** – (): is it

**** – (): 17:27

**** – (): um I started to really

**** – (): 17:29

**** – (): Embrace that um part of me and I started

**** – (): 17:32

**** – (): to use that in favor of my uh own work

**** – (): 17:35

**** – (): and you know it really gave me an edge

**** – (): 17:38

**** – (): it really gave me and

**** – (): 17:41

**** – (): a ground a really intense ground that

**** – (): 17:45

**** – (): um made me feel comfortable with who I

**** – (): 17:47

**** – (): am

**** – (): 17:48

**** – (): um it

**** – (): 17:50

**** – (): it opened up another world and I really

**** – (): 17:52

**** – (): became comfortable with being that

**** – (): 17:54

**** – (): sensitive with feeling those emotions

**** – (): 17:56

**** – (): very deeply and and I just started to

**** – (): 18:00

**** – (): um dive into them in my creative aspect

**** – (): 18:02

**** – (): and I think as you know creatives we

**** – (): 18:06

**** – (): um

**** – (): 18:07

**** – (): it’s it’s a strand and I think if you

**** – (): 18:09

**** – (): are willing to push yourself and you

**** – (): 18:12

**** – (): know challenge yourself

**** – (): 18:14

**** – (): um to go deeper in in the art you’re

**** – (): 18:16

**** – (): making in the content you’re writing in

**** – (): 18:19

**** – (): the book you’re writing

**** – (): 18:20

**** – (): um anything that you’re doing in the

**** – (): 18:22

**** – (): painting that you’re making

**** – (): 18:24

**** – (): um

**** – (): 18:26

**** – (): I I don’t know I think it’s a magical

**** – (): 18:28

**** – (): it’s it’s just it’s magical and

**** – (): 18:32

**** – (): um that’s where the magic happens so

**** – (): 18:34

**** – (): yeah I would really ask myself if I’m

**** – (): 18:36

**** – (): ready to make that magic happen for

**** – (): 18:38

**** – (): myself if I’m ready to go beyond the

**** – (): 18:40

**** – (): surface the fourth point that I would

**** – (): 18:42

**** – (): actually ask myself is one of the most

**** – (): 18:45

**** – (): important points a lot of artists we all

**** – (): 18:48

**** – (): no matter what state of Life what career

**** – (): 18:50

**** – (): stage we are on WE a lot of us

**** – (): 18:52

**** – (): experience that and it goes beyond being

**** – (): 18:55

**** – (): artists I think in general creative

**** – (): 18:57

**** – (): people we all really struggle with this

**** – (): 18:59

**** – (): which is am I ready to let go of uh

**** – (): 19:02

**** – (): Judgment of my own work and others

**** – (): 19:05

**** – (): um a lot of artists feel

**** – (): 19:07

**** – (): um captured I would say you know we feel

**** – (): 19:11

**** – (): boxed we feel like um

**** – (): 19:13

**** – (): we have to fulfill others expectation of

**** – (): 19:17

**** – (): who we are than our own people’s

**** – (): 19:20

**** – (): judgment really Define our careers um a

**** – (): 19:22

**** – (): lot of times where we feel like we have

**** – (): 19:24

**** – (): to make a certain thing we feel afraid

**** – (): 19:27

**** – (): to uh be ourselves

**** – (): 19:29

**** – (): um there are a lot of barriers

**** – (): 19:32

**** – (): come in when we’re thinking about okay

**** – (): 19:34

**** – (): who I am and who I want to be I think

**** – (): 19:39

**** – (): um you know when people’s judgment truly

**** – (): 19:43

**** – (): starts mattering us we

**** – (): 19:45

**** – (): start putting away the parts that you

**** – (): 19:49

**** – (): know we feel may not be appreciated by

**** – (): 19:51

**** – (): other people

**** – (): 19:52

**** – (): that truly takes away the power of our

**** – (): 19:55

**** – (): own uniqueness I think as artists our

**** – (): 19:58

**** – (): own unique voice our ideas even if they

**** – (): 20:00

**** – (): you know if they are not um if they may

**** – (): 20:03

**** – (): not please everyone and it’s not your

**** – (): 20:05

**** – (): job to please everyone so everyone will

**** – (): 20:07

**** – (): have ideas about how good or bad your

**** – (): 20:09

**** – (): art is how good or bad you know uh your

**** – (): 20:13

**** – (): thoughts your work anything it could be

**** – (): 20:15

**** – (): but it’s not your work it’s not your

**** – (): 20:17

**** – (): work to worry about it it’s not your

**** – (): 20:19

**** – (): work to

**** – (): 20:21

**** – (): um account it your work is to keep doing

**** – (): 20:24

**** – (): what you believe in so I think it as an

**** – (): 20:28

**** – (): essential truly an essential task for us

**** – (): 20:31

**** – (): as artists to know that if we want to

**** – (): 20:34

**** – (): keep going if we want to do this we have

**** – (): 20:36

**** – (): to liberate ourselves from others

**** – (): 20:38

**** – (): judgment and Judgment of our own self

**** – (): 20:40

**** – (): only then we’ll be able to unlock like

**** – (): 20:42

**** – (): you know this this person within us

**** – (): 20:44

**** – (): these emotions and

**** – (): 20:46

**** – (): um this this un you know unhinged part

**** – (): 20:49

**** – (): of us which truly will

**** – (): 20:53

**** – (): um put out what we feel into our work

**** – (): 20:56

**** – (): and truly Embrace that side so yeah that

**** – (): 21:00

**** – (): would be my fourth question if I were to

**** – (): 21:02

**** – (): ask myself okay here’s my fifth question

**** – (): 21:06

**** – (): I would really ask myself do I want to

**** – (): 21:09

**** – (): write my own story am I willing to take

**** – (): 21:12

**** – (): charge and write my own story because as

**** – (): 21:15

**** – (): artists I feel like we have

**** – (): 21:17

**** – (): we have this unique

**** – (): 21:20

**** – (): unique way of painting our own like the

**** – (): 21:22

**** – (): way we paint our canvases write our

**** – (): 21:24

**** – (): books

**** – (): 21:26

**** – (): um make our art we really are also

**** – (): 21:28

**** – (): crafting our own lives it only we’re

**** – (): 21:31

**** – (): um painting our own canvases of real

**** – (): 21:33

**** – (): life canvases and it’s it’s beautiful

**** – (): 21:35

**** – (): but also huge overwhelming process I

**** – (): 21:38

**** – (): feel like

**** – (): 21:39

**** – (): um and when you take on this task of

**** – (): 21:41

**** – (): being an artist

**** – (): 21:42

**** – (): um are you ready to think of your life

**** – (): 21:44

**** – (): beyond the canvas are you ready to

**** – (): 21:47

**** – (): create a life that truly immerses

**** – (): 21:50

**** – (): yourself in this story that you want to

**** – (): 21:52

**** – (): be and I think I really didn’t

**** – (): 21:54

**** – (): understand this for quite a while and I

**** – (): 21:57

**** – (): started to understand this later when I

**** – (): 21:59

**** – (): think I really found my voice as an

**** – (): 22:01

**** – (): artist I felt like okay this is what I

**** – (): 22:03

**** – (): really feel like

**** – (): 22:05

**** – (): um and I feel in the sense of finding my

**** – (): 22:08

**** – (): voice I think it’s an Ever evolving

**** – (): 22:10

**** – (): process but you find that cue and then

**** – (): 22:12

**** – (): you always keep following that and the

**** – (): 22:14

**** – (): day I feel like I I got hold of that I

**** – (): 22:17

**** – (): always kept asking myself like okay how

**** – (): 22:20

**** – (): do I curate my life how do I write the

**** – (): 22:23

**** – (): story of who I am

**** – (): 22:24

**** – (): just the way I want like I want to be uh

**** – (): 22:27

**** – (): what kind of a person do I want to be

**** – (): 22:29

**** – (): what kind of artist do I want to be do I

**** – (): 22:32

**** – (): want to be someone you know who paints

**** – (): 22:35

**** – (): Landscapes and you know I’m even talking

**** – (): 22:36

**** – (): on the surface right now and you know

**** – (): 22:38

**** – (): what kind of experiences do you want in

**** – (): 22:41

**** – (): your life that you

**** – (): 22:43

**** – (): um probably would want as an artist as

**** – (): 22:45

**** – (): well in your you know translating it in

**** – (): 22:47

**** – (): your own creative aspect so are you

**** – (): 22:49

**** – (): willing to design and create your own

**** – (): 22:52

**** – (): life and your own story because with

**** – (): 22:54

**** – (): every piece of art that you’re making

**** – (): 22:56

**** – (): it’s like you’re adding a chapter to

**** – (): 22:58

**** – (): your story that becomes a part of your

**** – (): 23:00

**** – (): story and some days there are extensive

**** – (): 23:02

**** – (): chapters some days these are happy

**** – (): 23:04

**** – (): chapters some days these are

**** – (): 23:05

**** – (): it eventually stands for who you are so

**** – (): 23:08

**** – (): you’re essentially writing your own

**** – (): 23:09

**** – (): story so all these things when you know

**** – (): 23:12

**** – (): when you look back and you’ll think who

**** – (): 23:15

**** – (): you are it’s all those things coming

**** – (): 23:17

**** – (): together that will start defining you so

**** – (): 23:20

**** – (): are you ready to take that

**** – (): 23:21

**** – (): responsibility of who you are creative

**** – (): 23:23

**** – (): like your creative life defining your

**** – (): 23:27

**** – (): identity are you ready to

**** – (): 23:30

**** – (): um craft your own story and yeah I think

**** – (): 23:33

**** – (): it’s it’s pretty intense but it’s also

**** – (): 23:36

**** – (): exciting the moment I start thinking

**** – (): 23:38

**** – (): about yes I mean I could design my life

**** – (): 23:41

**** – (): that excites me

**** – (): 23:43

**** – (): it feels risky um it feels unreal but

**** – (): 23:46

**** – (): wow when I will be able to do that

**** – (): 23:50

**** – (): um you know I’ve always been thinking

**** – (): 23:51

**** – (): about you know I really want to

**** – (): 23:54

**** – (): um move into you know in a remote

**** – (): 23:56

**** – (): location and have a green house and live

**** – (): 24:00

**** – (): with a lot of animals and I think

**** – (): 24:03

**** – (): um

**** – (): 24:04

**** – (): asking myself these questions that you

**** – (): 24:06

**** – (): know how I want my creative life and how

**** – (): 24:09

**** – (): can I think of my life as a bigger

**** – (): 24:12

**** – (): canvas and how do I want to write that

**** – (): 24:15

**** – (): story for me is

**** – (): 24:16

**** – (): um an important part of being an artist

**** – (): 24:18

**** – (): for me okay here’s my last question and

**** – (): 24:22

**** – (): my sixth question I would ask myself

**** – (): 24:25

**** – (): and this to be honest is a really really

**** – (): 24:28

**** – (): hard one

**** – (): 24:31

**** – (): okay hold your breaths

**** – (): 24:35

**** – (): you know I think before being an artist

**** – (): 24:37

**** – (): I was so self-critical I was

**** – (): 24:40

**** – (): so judgmental

**** – (): 24:42

**** – (): um I really didn’t feel comfortable with

**** – (): 24:45

**** – (): who I was and part of that problem was

**** – (): 24:47

**** – (): because of course in the environment I

**** – (): 24:49

**** – (): felt I was I just never could fit in

**** – (): 24:53

**** – (): the moment I started to you know take my

**** – (): 24:56

**** – (): identity of an artist

**** – (): 24:59

**** – (): I started to love myself more and I knew

**** – (): 25:01

**** – (): that I needed that love my that love for

**** – (): 25:04

**** – (): myself more because of you know of of

**** – (): 25:08

**** – (): the path I had taken if I as an artist

**** – (): 25:11

**** – (): myself wouldn’t

**** – (): 25:12

**** – (): love myself if I don’t give that warmth

**** – (): 25:15

**** – (): to myself to my soul and if I don’t

**** – (): 25:18

**** – (): fully love and accept of who I am

**** – (): 25:21

**** – (): I wouldn’t really be able to put myself

**** – (): 25:23

**** – (): in a hundred percent of who I am in my

**** – (): 25:25

**** – (): work in my art in my creativity and I

**** – (): 25:29

**** – (): always say this they say this that you

**** – (): 25:31

**** – (): know our work our art is mostly an

**** – (): 25:34

**** – (): extension of Who We Are

**** – (): 25:35

**** – (): and

**** – (): 25:36

**** – (): the more comfortable that you become

**** – (): 25:38

**** – (): with yourself the more loving of who you

**** – (): 25:40

**** – (): are the more you embrace your own

**** – (): 25:42

**** – (): identity

**** – (): 25:44

**** – (): uh the you know those stronger you feel

**** – (): 25:47

**** – (): associated with your art the more

**** – (): 25:49

**** – (): connection people can see and feel with

**** – (): 25:53

**** – (): you and I think as as an artist not only

**** – (): 25:57

**** – (): that our paths are bumpy there’s a lot

**** – (): 26:00

**** – (): of bump and there are a lot of um twists

**** – (): 26:04

**** – (): in turns and uh highs and lows but

**** – (): 26:09

**** – (): if we do not love and accept ourselves

**** – (): 26:11

**** – (): fully it can be a really overwhelming

**** – (): 26:14

**** – (): and hard experience

**** – (): 26:16

**** – (): so if I really want to go down this path

**** – (): 26:18

**** – (): again

**** – (): 26:20

**** – (): um if I were starting out again I would

**** – (): 26:23

**** – (): really ask myself that before taking

**** – (): 26:25

**** – (): this plant am I ready to love myself I

**** – (): 26:27

**** – (): will have to keep reminding myself that

**** – (): 26:30

**** – (): no matter what am I doing no matter what

**** – (): 26:32

**** – (): happens I will fully love and accept

**** – (): 26:34

**** – (): myself no matter what it is

**** – (): 26:37

**** – (): so yeah these were my six questions I

**** – (): 26:41

**** – (): would ask myself if I were to start

**** – (): 26:43

**** – (): today if I were to start you know start

**** – (): 26:46

**** – (): as an artist today let me recap this

**** – (): 26:48

**** – (): quickly for you and

**** – (): 26:51

**** – (): if you think that this episode May you

**** – (): 26:54

**** – (): know help someone

**** – (): 26:56

**** – (): um and if you think you would want to

**** – (): 26:57

**** – (): ask I think these are great questions

**** – (): 26:59

**** – (): even if you want to journal and I think

**** – (): 27:01

**** – (): I am I have started thinking but I’ve

**** – (): 27:04

**** – (): always been thinking about these

**** – (): 27:05

**** – (): questions but I think I will be more

**** – (): 27:07

**** – (): intentional about them and try to go

**** – (): 27:09

**** – (): deeper and if you do too let me know uh

**** – (): 27:14

**** – (): if these were helpful but let me recap

**** – (): 27:16

**** – (): this for you

**** – (): 27:18

**** – (): the first question I would ask myself is

**** – (): 27:20

**** – (): am I willing to put unwavering faith in

**** – (): 27:23

**** – (): my own self and in my creativity

**** – (): 27:25

**** – (): the second question I would ask myself

**** – (): 27:27

**** – (): am I ready to fall a million times and

**** – (): 27:30

**** – (): put myself back together again and again

**** – (): 27:33

**** – (): and again the third question would be am

**** – (): 27:36

**** – (): I ready to dig deeper am I ready to feel

**** – (): 27:39

**** – (): my emotions fully am I ready to ask

**** – (): 27:42

**** – (): myself those difficult questions and

**** – (): 27:44

**** – (): take those difficult

**** – (): 27:46

**** – (): experiences of my life and fully embrace

**** – (): 27:49

**** – (): them

As a creative, we all must start our journey from somewhere. From being fascinated by art to acknowledging that this is something you want to take seriously, you must choose a starting point and write your own story.  If you have been in the art world for some time, can you think back to when all of this started? Do your recall how you felt and what was it that kept pushing your forwards?

This is what this week’s episode is about, as Charuka Arora talks about her own creative journey and how it led her to her own self-discovery. For all the aspiring artists out there who are only starting their creative journey, this episode provides an amazing opportunity to sit down with yourself and ask yourself some crucial questions that will help you confront your inner artist.

Putting unwavering faith in yourself

As an artist, the most important thing to do is to believe in yourself. As Charuka rightly says, that it is not our art background, or the lack of it, but our faith in ourselves that ultimately pushes us forward. Charuka did not attend an art school, and yet she followed her heart and listened to it. You don’t need to have an art degree to pursue your passion, rather, you need to have the utmost belief in your inner voice that is guiding you.

To be an artist is to believe to be an artist.

Having the strength to get back up

As an artist, you are going to fail. It is inevitable. Falling is part of the journey, and it is only through these hurdles that we get the opportunity to learn and grow as a person and as a creative. This is what Charuka also preaches, to ask yourself if you are ready to get up every time you fall. It’s important that you give yourself a pep talk before your begin your journey, and understand that no amount of failing or falling will hinder your progress. Charuka emphasizes the importance of resilience, and that in the end, it’s not the world against us, but perhaps our inner critic that we need to silence.

Sometimes it’s just not giving up even if you are bad, if you’re doing a crappy job, if you are just even barely making it.

Embracing your emotions

To be an artist is to embrace yourself, all of it. That means the good and the bad, after all, that is what makes you who you are and it is what brings out your creativity. As artists, we are meant to be deep thinkers, and therefore, you are required to dig deeper and explore the depths of your emotions and experiences, instead of being ashamed of them. Only then will you be able to be authentic to yourself and your inner artist. “Are you willing to feel your emotions fully, and to ask yourself those difficult questions?” If yes, then you are on the right track and you will be able to use that emotional depth to inform and inspire your art.

We feel much deeper. Our emotions are intense and I think that is why we express them in the form of creativity.

Letting go of any judgment

Overcoming fear of judgment and self-doubt is not easy, but it’s extremely important for an artist. Before you begin your creative journey, you must ask yourself if you are ready to let go of others’ judgment of yourself and your work. Do you think the answer to that question is yes? Or do you feel a sense of fear thinking about it? This is what Charuka says, that letting go of others’ opinions and embracing your own unique voice is something you must do. You have to. Until you keep yourself occupied by those fears, you will not be able to unlock your true potential. As you embark on your journey, your creativity will be overshadowed by those fears, and that you must let go of.

It’s an essential task for us as artists to know that if we want to keep going, we have to liberate ourselves from others judgment and judgment of our own self.

Writing your own story

What does writing your story means? Charuka reflects on her past self and talks about how being an artist means finding your voice, something which she was able to achieve after her own experiences in the creative world.

Writing your own story means to be in charge of your destiny. You cannot control the future, nor can you control your success and failures, but something you can control is to decide on how you want to curate your life. What kind of experiences do you want as an artist? Do you want to paint landscapes? Which aspect of design and creativity do you want to explore? As an artist, today you have the chance to make any decision that speaks to your inner child, something that excites you and gives you a purpose. Once you answer that question, you will be ready to write your own story as an artist.

Asking myself these questions, how I want my creative life, and how do I want to write that story for me, is an important part of being an artist.

Accepting yourself fully

This may be the last question to ask yourself, but it is no less important. Are you ready to love and accept yourself fully? In the beginning, it was hard for Charuka to be comfortable with who she was, and it all came down to her environment where she did not fit in. For her, the change came when she started to love herself more. Being an artist means you will go through numerous ups and downs, lows and highs, and you need to love yourself in every situation. Your inner artists deserves all the love and warmth in the world, and if you’re not going to give it that, then who else will?!

For your creativity to bloom, and for your inner artist to be able to give its 100%, it’s important that you also give it your 100%! The importance of recognizing your worth and valuing yourself as an artist is something that many don’t realize, and that’s why, you, as an aspiring artist, must acknowledge that today as you begin this exciting creative journey. The more comfortable and loving you are with yourself, the more people will feel connected with your art!

Our work our art is mostly an extension of who we are.

self-confidence

By reflecting on these six aspects, Charuka thinks that you can prepare yourself for the upcoming creative journey. By establishing that you have faith in your skills, and that you are ready to embrace and love your true self, you will feel more confident about what’s to come. Going through such affirmations will also help you be more clear-headed about what you want to do and the direction you want to take. We are confident that by participating in these reflection exercises, you will be able to form a remarkable connection with your inner self.
