Voir Dire: Truth and Perception in Art by Anupa Mehta

Anupa Mehta Contemporary Art (AMCA) is bringing together some of India’s most celebrated contemporary artists for an exciting exhibition titled “Voir Dire: In the Round.” This exhibition delves into the complex relationship between truth, perception, and artistic expression. Running from March 13 to April 30, 2025, at AMCA’s gallery in Colaba, Mumbai, the show will feature thought-provoking artworks that challenge viewers to reflect on what they see and believe.
What is Voir Dire?
The term “Voir Dire” originates from old French and means “to speak the truth.” In legal contexts, it refers to the process of questioning witnesses to uncover hidden realities and to differentiate between appearance and authenticity. Curated by Anupa Mehta, a renowned gallerist, curator, and author, this exhibition invites viewers to explore how truth is constructed, perceived, and revealed from multiple perspectives.
A Visionary Shift in AMCA’s Artistic Direction
Anupa Mehta shares her insights on the gallery’s evolution:
When we launched Anupa Mehta Contemporary Art in 2008, our primary focus was on nurturing young and emerging artists. However, since 2018, we have expanded our vision to include internationally recognized mid-career artists. With this latest exhibition, we take another step forward by showcasing established contemporary artists through curated group shows.
This shift reflects AMCA’s commitment to fostering critical dialogue in contemporary art while engaging collectors, art enthusiasts, and new audiences.
Featured Artists and Their Works
“Voir Dire: In the Round” brings together works from some of India’s most renowned contemporary artists, each presenting a unique interpretation of truth and perception.
- Arunkumar HG – His sculpture of a tough cactus shows the effects of climate change.
- Benitha Perciyal – Her life-sized sculpture highlights the struggles of displacement and loss.
- Bose Krishnamachari – His mixed-media installations challenge traditional storytelling in art.
- Chittrovanu Mazumdar – His work mourns the fading of a shared collective voice.
- G Ravinder Reddy – He turns an ordinary fruit into a sacred symbol, giving it deeper meaning.

- Sudarshan Shetty – His sculptural installations blur the line between materials and their meanings.
- Valay Shende – His sculpture of an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) caught in a trap critiques democracy.
Each piece invites viewers to engage in their own form of “voir dire”, questioning reality, illusions, and deeper truths embedded in contemporary society.
An Invitation to Experience Art Beyond the Surface
The exhibition highlights how art captures and reflects the world around it. Each artwork in “Voir Dire” reveals multiple layers of meaning, encouraging viewers to see how social issues, political events, and personal experiences shape our understanding of truth. By using different materials, symbols, and artistic techniques, the artists invite people to look beyond the surface and think more deeply about what is real and what is simply a perception. This interaction between materials and meaning creates a powerful experience, making the audience question and reflect on the hidden truths within each piece.
