Who is Bjorn Rune Lie?
Rune Lie is an internationally acclaimed Norwegian illustrator and fine artist who now calls Bristol, UK, home. With a vivid imagination and a talent for creating rich, textured work, Bjorn has been telling stories through his art for more than 20 years. His pieces often bring together elements of nature, nostalgia, and a touch of whimsy, making them instantly recognizable and deeply engaging.

His art has appeared in a wide range of places, from milk cartons and school textbooks to album covers, museum commissions, and international magazines. But more than the impressive list of projects, it’s his creative spirit that stands out. People who’ve worked with him often describe him as a joy to collaborate with—humble, imaginative, and endlessly curious about the world around him.

Bjorn Rune Lie’s Early Life & Education
Bjorn grew up in Norway, surrounded by deep forests, harsh winters, and an abundance of folk tale elements that seeped into his visual language early on. After moving to the UK, he pursued his studies in illustration at Falmouth College of Arts, graduating in 2001. Since then, he’s been living and working in Bristol, cycling through the city with art materials, firewood, and the occasional floorboard strapped to the back of his bike.

Though far from his Norwegian roots, the sense of home, its textures, stories, and eccentricities, never left his work. Bjorn’s creative base today is Jamaica Street Studios in Bristol, where he divides his time between personal projects, fine art, and high-profile commissions.
Themes and Inspirations
His illustrations often explore themes of wilderness, surreal landscapes, and curious characters that feel plucked from a dream or distant memory. He has a gift for blurring the lines between the real and the imagined—where forests hum with life, and animals seem to carry stories in their eyes. Bjorn’s style is instantly recognizable. It combines hand-drawn textures with earthy, nostalgic color palettes and bold compositions. There’s always a touch of eccentricity, like anthropomorphic animals, vintage greenhouses, or quiet, otherworldly settings that adds depth and wonder to his work.

Rather than romanticizing nature, Bjorn chooses to highlight its strangeness, its stillness, and its quiet dignity. He leans into the imperfections and oddities, creating pieces that feel honest and alive. Through layered patterns and symbolic storytelling, he brings to life a world that feels both timeless and personal. He once said :
I’m drawn to the quiet drama in nature.” It’s in the stillness that the most imaginative stories unfold
That sense of stillness and imagination is what defines Bjorn Rune Lie’s work. His illustrations are like atmospheres that ask you to slow down and gently guide you into a story you didn’t know you needed.

Bjorn Rune Lie’s Artistic Process
Bjorn Rune Lie’s process is as original as his art. Known for constantly experimenting, he avoids repetition and strives for an element of surprise in every piece.

Currently, he’s working with a mix of scalpels, sponge rollers, and ground-up oil pastels, developing a technique that combines razor-sharp definition with a rough, tactile quality. “It looks sharp, it’s full of wonk, and it’s hard to overwork, he says. “Good for the soul… not so good for the lungs,” he jokes, often donning a dust mask while he creates.

Exhibitions and Achievements
Over the years, Bjorn Rune Lie has earned recognition not just for his commercial illustration but for his contributions to contemporary art and visual storytelling. His work has been showcased in solo and group exhibitions across Europe, where viewers are drawn into his textured, narrative-rich worlds. One of his standout achievements includes the critically acclaimed illustrated book “The Wolf’s Whistle,” published by Nobrow Press. Told entirely through imagery, the book is a visual journey that highlights Bjorn’s gift for wordless storytelling. It has become a beloved work among illustration enthusiasts.

His client list is equally impressive, including The New Yorker, The New York Times, Penguin Books, The Guardian, The Victoria and Albert Museum, and many more. Despite working with some of the biggest names in publishing and media, Bjorn maintains an authentic and consistent voice across all his projects.
Where Bjorn’s Imagination Is Headed Next
As he moves forward, Bjorn Rune Lie continues to explore new ways of telling stories. Whether he’s illustrating a picture book, designing fine art prints, or experimenting with animation, he remains endlessly curious—and that curiosity keeps his work evolving.

Lately, Bjorn has been drawn to creating more personal pieces, works that reflect his thoughts on the changing environment and the quiet, emotional bond between people and nature.
