Ep 38. Weaving facets of human experience into vibrant & symbolic art with Artist Phyllis Gorsen

I n the 38th episode of the Arts to Hearts podcast, our host Charuka Arora is joined in conversation from Philadelphia with passionate figurative, collage and abstract artist Phyllis Gorsen who creates representative, energetic patterns filled with movement and vibrancy.

Phyllis ventured into art at the tender age of 16 but was dissuaded from pursing it formally due to family pressure.

After spending 14 years in corporate America and the arrival of her son she decided to hold back no longer and pursue art once again.

At 45 and along with juggling the juggling the responsibilities of being a mom, the hard reality of art school helped her undersrtand her intention and exactly why she was pursuing art while testing her resolve.

Phyllis’s interest in patterns and the related memories and emotions is what captured her attention and eventually led her to her niche- collage painting.

Phyllis share that whenever she was stuck with her paintings, she would pull out her buckets of random paper samples and put it to her paintings, allowing herself to be inspired and that is how her collage paintings came to life.

Incorporating paper to painting and she discovered a comfort level with it, which meditatively translated into eye catching abstract designs which are now highly recognized.
