Threading a mystical paradigm of the ordinary: Artist Spotlight on Eva Silberknoll

Artist Bio: My name is Eva Silberknoll, I am a visual artist and photographer. My home base is a small town in the east of Austria, near Vienna.
I have been taking photographs since I was 14 years old, when I took my parents’ old Agfa Color during our first holiday by the sea. Since then I am fascinated by capturing fleeting impressions and transforming them into something special, through my personal gaze. To this day, I am inspired by the almost infinite expressive possibilities of this medium.

My creative career started in the fashion industry as a member of a small label. In 1998 we won the IMOTA Young Talent Award. My career as a designer did not last for a long time, but my love for fashion remained and continues to inspire me. Textile techniques are, therefore, an integral part of my creative practice.

Fashion was succeeded by art, and I stared to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, focusing on photography and graphics. In order to earn a living, I started to work as a flight attendant about 20 years ago. In the meantime, it is only a side hustle. However, the many impressions, experiences, colours, shapes and cultures are still a great influence on my artistic work.
My work is exhibited in Austria as well as internationally.

Last summer I had a solo show entitled “Time Travel” at the gallery “Zugängliche Kunst” in Carinthia. Furthermore, my work was displayed at group exhibitions in New York, Italy and Mexico. Again and again, I continue with cooperative ventures. Currently, I collaborate with the men’s tailor “Raftis bespoke” in New York, working on a cooperation between art and fashion.

My objective is to create something special with the help of art and to inspire people: to inspire and to enchant them in the very same way as I am from the many visual expressions. Because art is magic.

Artist Statement

The photograph is at the centre of my artistic work. It either stands alone or is the canvas of my mixed media artworks. I combine photography, colour and textile techniques. My creative career began as member of a fashion label, that´s why I like to work interdisciplinary. I love to experiment and to merge different techniques.

With the help of my artwork I tell stories – stories of personal journeys, places of desires and dreams. Staged photography enables me to visualise these and leaves enough space for the viewer’s own narrative. “The works give strength and remind us that life itself is magical.” – as a French writer in New York recently described my art.

Furthermore, I want to surprise with my pictures: it may be possible that one discovers a rainbow made with the sewing machine on a Polaroid. What does that mean? I am happy to leave that up to you.

Eva’s creative process

I grab the camera and off I go. I prefer staged photography and still lifes. Once the photo is finished, it either stands on its own or becomes the canvas for my mixed media artworks. During my studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, I developed this special kind of mixed media techniques.

Therefore, I apply the photo on canvas and open up the space for creative experiments. Then there come the colours , preferably acrylic paint. I paint over parts of the photo or highlight them and sometimes I write a message into the picture.

Subsequently the sewing machine enters the stage. Or just a needle and a thread, as I also like to sew by hand. The textile techniques make it unique. No stitch is like the other. It is a form of drawing with fabric. With this technique I add graphic elements to the picture or set colourful accents. This creates beautiful, haptic structures, and adds another layer to the artwork.

By combining digital photography and analogue techniques, I want to connect old and new working processes, and, thus, create space for something fresh.

  1. naturally like your web site however you need to take a look at the spelling on several of your posts. A number of them are rife with spelling problems and I find it very bothersome to tell the truth on the other hand I will surely come again again.
