1.Get Organized & Plan Ahead

Don’t do things in a hurry, be selective when you are looking for an art open call. Once you have decided on the open call you want to submit for it’s time to start the work and get going. Make sure that you have enough time before the deadline to submit a good, thoughtful submission. Some of the open calls are not very tricky to apply for but on the other hand, some can really ask for your full involvement, and some needs a lot more than just some contact details or an upload of artworks. So they require planning ahead.

2. Put In The Research Work

Reading all the instructions carefully when you are applying for anything is really important. It’s very important to understand exactly how you can prepare & submit your application. You should know everything from the very beginning and thus decide whether it is worth it for you to apply or not. Once you have made up your mind, make sure that you are following all the instructions as they have been given in the open call. And by doing this, you will prevent all the risks which could go into the rejection of your application. In the end, just think positive and keep in mind that entering juried calls and such opportunities enables your work to reach a wider audience in the art world that you may not have met otherwise.

3. Select Your “The Best” Images

Your images should be representing your style of work. Remember, when the open call you are applying to has a theme, then your work should also fit well & engage with the theme. The work that you are selecting should be somewhere related to the theme & if it’s not then you should be able to make a case for it. On the other hand when there isn’t any theme going on, then also you need to be careful about which works you would be submitting. Always select works that you feel are just perfect. Okay so now, that you have selected your images you have to make sure that they are some real high-quality images, and this is absolutely non-negotiable. It should represent the details of your work with proper lighting. Also, make sure that you are giving the right size images which are clean and representable.

4. Don’t Miss The Deadline

This is one of the most important of all. So you have decided on the open call, everything is prepared you have also selected good images but you missed the deadline. Do you think the jury will consider your application? No, they won’t, they will not consider it no matter how good your application is. Sometimes an application can be time-consuming, so you should better start working in advance. And then once you are done with everything, you are ready to send your application. Also, an extra tip, apply & send it at least one week before the deadline so that if there will be any problem with your application, you will be able to correct it. So now, all you have to do is to keep a track of the time so that the deadline doesn’t get missed.

5. Follow Up

Following up with jurors after you have submitted to an open call, award or any other opportunity is always a good idea. As it does not give you the guarantee to be selected but it does create a kind of impression on the jurors. You can just simply start a conversation by thanking them for creating such a great opportunity by telling them how grateful you are for this. Who knows you might get a reply and catch their attention. Also, connect with them on social media, that would also be really helpful to get you to make one open call worth it.
